The case for cutting cable is usually made with a single monthly figure and a lot of enthusiasm. Here is the two-year arithmetic instead, including the parts that do not favour IPTV.

Even at the generous end for cable and the pessimistic end for IPTV, the gap over two years is close to a thousand dollars. That is the entire argument, and it is a strong one.
What you genuinely give up
An honest comparison has to include this part.
Guaranteed uptime. A satellite feed either works or the weather is bad. IPTV depends on your broadband, your wifi and someone else’s servers. A good provider gets you to 99.9%; that is not 100%.
Someone to shout at. Cable companies have obligations, regulators and a phone number. IPTV support is usually a chat window. Ours is staffed 24/7 by people, but it is still a chat window.
Simplicity for non-technical viewers. A cable box has one remote and no login. IPTV needs an app, credentials and someone in the household who can re-enter them if the television is factory reset.
What you gain beyond the money
- Every region in one guide. The thing cable structurally cannot do — Norwegian, British, Arabic and Filipino channels side by side.
- No contract. Nothing renews, and nobody phones you to talk you out of leaving.
- Sport included. The single biggest line item in most cable bills, in the base price.
- It travels. The same login works on a laptop in another country.
Who should not switch
If your broadband is unreliable, if nobody in the house is comfortable entering a login into an app, or if you watch three channels and would not use the catalogue — cable is fine and switching will annoy you. The money only matters if the product actually replaces what you had.
The sensible way to find out
